Toxic Household Chemicals that Can Harm Your Dog

Some of the most popular household products that people use on a daily basis, such as detergents and polishers, contain at least one harmful ingredient that can negatively affect your dog’s health. Even though these products are very potent and get the job the done right, they leave harmful chemical residue on the floor, carpet, furniture, and clothes which are easily accessible places for pets. If you want to make sure your pet lives a long, healthy life, here are few of the harmful chemicals to avoid and keep out of your pet’s reach in order to ensure its longevity.

Ethylene Glycerol
Ethylene glycerol is a chemical commonly found in antifreeze formulations. Due to its sweet scent, pets, and especially dogs are easily drawn to this poisonous substance. Dog owners should be extra careful not to let their dog near ethynyl glycerol, as a small amount may cause severe kidney problems, and in the worst case scenario, cancer or even death.

Formaldehyde is a commonly used chemical in various house cleaning products, which can cause irritation of the skin, eyes, and nose in humans. A great amount of this chemical can even cause nausea, wheezing, and coughing when inhaled. Formaldehyde can be extremely harmful to pets in that it can trigger the development of cancerous cells in your dog. Dog owners are strongly advised against using products containing this potent chemical.

Sprays and Polishers
Toilet bowl cleaners, lye, drain cleaners, rust removers, and calcium cleaners belong to a group of acidic or alkaline cleaners, which are extremely corrosive in nature. This automatically leads us to the conclusion that they pose a serious health risk for both your family members and your pet. Even though some products may come with a label that says “natural”, do bear in mind that they may still trigger severe reactions and jeopardise your pet’s well-being.

Detergents and fabric softener
Detergents and fabric softeners are essential household items that make day-to-day tasks much easier. However, make sure that these products stay out of your dog’s reach, as they can cause severe health complications which include ulcers in the mouth, esophagus and stomach.

To avoid frequent visits to the vet due to serious health complications, like kidney damage, ulcers or cancer in your dog, make sure to keep common household products containing toxic chemicals out of your dog’s reach.
